Guns for Teachers

By Bryan.Martin - Posted on 25 August 2008

The Harrold Independent School District is working to allow teachers and administrators the ability to carry guns at school. The move is designed to deter and protect against school shootings.

Teachers and administers are required to have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun, be authorized by the district, receive training in crisis management and hostile situations, and use special ammunition designed to minimize ricochet.

I applaud Harrold ISD for taking the first step in the nation to adequately protect students. It is paramount for free people to have self defense. School “gun-free zones” are like giant spot lights signaling mentally ill individuals to go on killing sprees.

The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 was ruled by the US Supreme Court as unconstitutional but was reworked and passed again in 1995. Reviewing shooting events, we see a doubling in secondary school shootings in the 1990s that has held steady through the 2000s. There is also a doubling in college shootings in the 2000s. Is it coincidental that we see these death increases with the passing of this legislation?

The Columbine High School massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before committing suicide. The incident lasted for over four hours.

At Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho casually walked around the campus and executed victims secure in the knowledge that no one could defend themselves. After two hours and 32 deaths, he committed suicide.

On February 14, 2008 at Northern Illinois University, 6 people were killed and 18 injured when a former student, Steven Kazmierczak, opened fire in a large oceanography class. This incident happened quickly, but an armed student or teacher could have saved lives in this and all school shootings.

“Gun-free zones” are mass killing zones and putting our faith in the police will end up costing lives. Guns are not the problem. A killer will find any method to accomplish his goal and people must be able to defend themselves.

Talk to your school board members about implementing a similar gun policy for your schools. It is imperative for a positive learning environment that administrators, teachers, and students feel and are safe in school.

You are completely correct. It is our constitutional right to protect ourselves in any situation. As a future teacher I have seen what they do when there is a threat to the school.

They came over the loud speaker and said a code. Each threat has a different code. Sometimes it can be confusing.

For example, at my field based block they had a strange man walking around the school and they called a code. We had to turn off the lights and crawl under our desks and be quiet. We waited for about 30 minutes until they called another code to say it was okay to go back to teaching. What could have happened in those thirty minutes, that is a long time? If we had guns it would have been over in less than 5 minutes.

What is going to keep that man from breaking into our portable and do whatever he is intending? How can we protect ourselves against this man? How do we protect our students? Tackling him, especially if he has a gun will not do. He will kill you before you can get to him.

Having a gun will give you the chance to protect your students and yourself, at a safe distance!! Of course I do believe you need to be trained in how to handle a gun and you must have a license to use it but it is our 2nd Amendment that gives us the right to bear arms!!!!!
